The Sumerian/Alien Connection - Even in my highshchool and college history classes little was ever said about the ancient Sumerians. I wander why?

Like many other things I've learned, It seems that my knowledge of the Sumerians was gained through independent study rather than in a class room. The same can be said of Nikola Tesla. Is there something the history books aren't telling us? I believe the answer to that question is a yes. As always, links to the Wikipedia online encyclopedia will accompany this article.
The Sumerians were an advanced ancient civilization that existed in southern Mesopotamia, which today is in the same area as Iraq. The Sumerian people had a appearance, language, and culture which was very distinct from their Semitic neighbors.
It is also interesting to briefly note that the Sumerian language itself is a language isolate, meaning in linquistics that it belongs to no known language family. The issue that I want to cover in this article is Sumerian Mythology, and how it relates to UFOs and Aliens. This may be a reason that little is said about Sumerians in school classrooms.
Many historians such as Zecharia Sitchin, Sherry Shriner, and others show overwhelming evidence that the ancient Sumerians believed that all their knowledge and very existence was a result of extraterrestrial beings. The "Ancient Astronaut Theory" is rejected by mainstream scientists and is considered pseudoscience.
But as always, lets look at the evidence. The term "Anunnaki" is defined as 'those who came from heaven to Earth'.
What is even more fascinating is that the Sumerians had an excellent knowledge of astronomy and mathematics. They were already aware of the existence of Venus, and could measure planetary cycles of over 26,000 years.
Here we have a civilization that didn't even exist 26,000 years able to measure these cycles. While many mainstream scientists dismiss Sumerian history as mythology, what if their "mythology" is history as they knew and recorded it?
